Some time we need to work with some files which located in a particular folder from command prompt. But it’s too complicated to work with long folder ( which even carry spaces ) names or a folder located deep inside other folders. So it’s very convenient if we can launch command prompt from the folder which we want to work with. Vista has this feature. If you hold down the shift key while right clicking on a folder vista gives a option to Open Command Window Here.

But Windows xp does not comes with such option. In this tutorial we will add vista like command prompt option to folder context menu. So when you right click on a folder you can directly open command prompt without changing the path from dos manually.

Follow these steps :

1.  Start regedit from run dialogue box.

2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell

3. Create a new key by right clicking on shell & select New > Key

4. Name it command

5. Now select command. On the right pane double click the value Default

6. Now on the Value Data field type Open Command Window Here

7. Now select the command key on the left pane again. Right click on it.

8. Select New > Key & give it’s name command.

9. Now select the command sub key. On right pan double click on the value Default & type cmd.exe /k “cd %L”

Close regedit ( Registry Editor ). Log off & Log in again.

Now you should see Open Command Window Here whenever you right click on a folder.

By default windows only allow us to eject the CD/DVD drive tray
from the explorer. But windows doesn’t allow us to close the drive tray.
There are software & tricks available that allows you to eject/close
your CD/DVD drive tray. But to use them either you have to open up explorer
or run a software in background.

But it’s more convenient & easy to open your CD/DVD drive tray from the
desktop.

In this tutorial we are going to see how to eject & close CD/DVD
drive tray using desktop shortcut.

Steps :

1. First download a tool called NirCmd from here

2. Unzip it. Copy the file “nircmd.exe” into your
windows dir ( for eg. C:\Windows )

Shortcut for opening/ejecting CD/DVD Drive Tray

3. Right click on a free space on the desktop.

4. Select New > Shortcut & a new window will appear.

5. In the location area browse to the path of the “nircmd.exe” file location
in this case it’s C:\Windows\nircmd.exe

6. Now put a space at the end of the line ( C:\Windows\nircmd.exe )
and type in this cdrom open h: ( assuming your Cd/DVD drive letter is H:)
So the whole line will look like C:\Windows\nircmd.exe cdrom open h:

7. Click next & give name of the shortcut like Open DVD Drive. Click Finish.

Shortcut for Closing CD/DVD drive tray

1. Repeat the steps 3.4.5

2. Now put a space at the end of the line ( C:\Windows\nircmd.exe )
and type in this cdrom close h: ( assuming your Cd/DVD drive letter is H:)
So the whole line will look like C:\Windows\nircmd.exe cdrom close h:

3. Click next & give name for the shortcut like Close DVD Drive. Click Finish.

To add an icon to the shortcuts follow this step
Right click on the shortcut. Choose Properties > Change icon
Select a suitable icon. click ok & click apply

Say you don’t want to load a specific item ( ie control panel applet ) in the control panel
or you don’t want to see unnecessary items in the control panel.

This trick will disable any item that you don’t want to show up in the control panel.

Open Registry Editor.

Go to Start > Run type regedit and press enter.

Navigate go to the following key :

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Control Panel\don't load]

on the right pan window right click & create a new string value & give it
the name of the specific control panel applet file name ie a .cpl file.

For example : appwiz.cpl

Example

exit registry editor and you’re done. Open Control Panel & you
won’t see the Add or Remove Program icon.

To restore the specific control panel item ( ie applet ) just delete the
newly created value. In This case it’s appwiz.cpl.

Windows basically execute run commands from within command prompt.
Every time you execute a command from windows run dialogue box
the command prompt just disappears. This method has it’s own
advantage & disadvantage.

But, sometime we need to see the command output in command prompt window. But run dialouge box just don’t allow us to do so.

Say, You have executed a command like ipconfig or systeminfo into run
dialogue box. But after executing this command the command prompt
will just quit without showing you any result.

But if you need to see the output of that command that you give in
run dialogue box you have to refrain command prompt from disappearing.

So, Here is the trick for Refrain Command Prompt from Disappearing

Just add cmd /k before you type in any command into run dialogue box.
For example :

cmd /k ipconfig
cmd /k systeminfo

By default windows format pen drive with fat file system
which has it’s own limitation. One big issue with fat file system is
you cannot store a file larger than 4GB. But nowadays we have to transfer file
more than 4GB such as DVD or dual layer DVD image. But NTFS file system is more
reliable & don’t have this kind of limitations. So you can tranfer a file
which is more than 4GB big.

Warning : Backup all data from your pen drive before following this procedure.

Plug in your pen drive. Click start & Right click on My Computer.
Select Properties > Hardware > Device Manager.

Expand Disk Drives & Click on your Pen Drive Name. ( In my case it’s : Jetflash )
Now Right click on your pen drive name & select Properties.
Go to Polocies Tab & Select Optimize for Performance.

Settings

Click OK. Close device Manager.

Now open My Computer & Select Your Pen Drive ( ie Removable Disk ).
Right click on it & select Format. Click on File system box.
& Voila! You see the NTFS option.

Now select NTFS & fromat your pen drive.

Another Method :

You can also convert your pen drive’s fat file system to ntfs as you use to convert
fat partion to nfts.

Open command prompt. In the command prompt window, type :

convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs

In my case my pen drive’s letter is N so it will be :

convert N: /fs:ntfs

Note : You can’t use this pen drive with under win 9x & me.
To use this pen drive under 9x & me format it using fat file system.

I’ve used Windows Xp With Sp3 as my Os.
Plz test on on Other os like vista & tell me if it works.
Also do inform me after formatting the pen drive is it usable under
linux .( I think it will work though not sure )

This hack will enable you to show your name or any desired text
beside windows taskbar ( system tray ) clock.

Follow these steps :

1. Go to Cntrol Panel > Regonal & Language Options.

2. In the Regional Otions tab click on Customize & Go to Time Tab.
For Vista : In the bottom of the Format tab click on Customize this format button.

. Select the AM Symbol box & enter your name or any
desired text. ( This Will Show up Intead of AM )

4. Select PM Symbol box & enter your name or any
desired text. ( This Will Show up Intead of PM )

5. Click on Apply & OK. Click on Apply & OK.

Note : Tried it on Xp Sp2 & Vista Ultimate 64 bit

How to Use Older Extensions and Themes With Newer Versions of Firefox

If you want to use Extensions & themes that are not insatalling on newer versions of

firefox then follow these steps :

> Open Firefox.

> on the address bar type “about:config” without the quotes.

> create a new Boolean key aka preference & name it “extensions.checkCompatibility”

without the quotes.

> set the value of this newly created key aka preference at false.

Restart Firefox.

After this tweak your Firefox Addon Manager window should look like this.

> Now use any old Extensions and themes that was not installing before.

Note I’ve used Firefox 2.0.0.12 & Firefox Beta 3.0.b3 for this purpose. Have not tested

it on
latest firefox 3 beta. So guys please test it on that & let me know since my priority

Note : All plugins & themes will not work flawlessly in this way since the browser
change it’s functionality with every major releases. But they will install.

This tute is just for fun & try something new in geeky way

1. Open notepad & type :
#EXTM3U
at the first line.
2. On the second Line type :
#EXTINF:101,Eagles – Hotel California
(you can enter any desired song name intead of “Eagles – Hotel California” )
3. On the third line typr :
Eagles – Hotel California.mp3
(this is real file name of the song )
4. To add more songs repeat the step 2 & 3.
Just change the “#EXTINF:” Number, Song Name & File Name as approprite
5. Save the file with a .m3u extension ( eg. lovedsongs.m3u ) into the
same folder where the original song files exist.

For example :

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:101,Eagles – Hotel California
Eagles – Hotel California.mp3
#EXTINF:102,Bridge over troubled water
Bridge over troubled water.wma
#EXTINF:103,Love You
Love You.ogg

Windows Movie Maker is a great piece of software that comes bundled
with Windows xp. To capture videos with windows movie maker follow
these steps :

1. Go to Start > All Programs & click on Windows Movie Maker
to open movie maker.

2. Press Ctrl+R or or select File > Capture Video & click on it.

3. This will open a windows . Under Available Devices choose your
desired video capture device & under Audio Devices choose your desired
audio capture device. Under Audio capture source choose desired audio
capture source such as mic in, line in etc.

4. You can configure more advanced options of your camera or
TV tuner card by clicking on configure button.

5. When you are done click next.

6. On box number 1 enter a name for your captured video file &
box number 2 chhose where do you want to save your captured video file
by clicking on browse button if you don’t like the default location.
Click Next.

7. In this window you can configure settings about captured videos quality
if you don’t like the default setting
” Best quality on playback on my computer ” . You can choose from DV-AVI
( but I think you’ll need a DV camera to enable this feature ) or
Other Settings. Under Other Settings you’ll find many more options to
capture your video. Under Settings details & Video File Size you can
find important infos such as video format, resolution, file size etc.

8. Turn on your camera recor mode if it it not already turnded on. Click
next.

9. In this window you can see a preview of the video you’re going
to capture. Click on Start Capture to strat the Video capture.
If you want to edit the captured video check the box
“Create clips when the wizard finishes “
If you want to capture the video for limited period of time check
the box of capture time limit & put in your desired duration.

10. If you want to pause while capturing click on Stop Capture. Then
click on Start Capture again to capture Video. When you’re done click on Finish.

This will open your captured video as an clip or several clips
( Depends on what you’ve choosen on Step No.9 under
“”Create clips when the wizard finishes “” )

You can edit the clip or clips as you wish or you can just
exit movie maker without any changes.

Play the video file from the location where you’ve saved
it on Step No.6 Option No.2.

Ok. I’am going to start this tutorial from scratch.
I’ll present this tute as a workshop in front of you
so that you don’t have to suffer in confusions.

Here I go :

1. login as root. Create a folder under root and name
it freebsd (eg./freebsd). create a folder under freebsd
and name it mnt (eg./freebsd/mnt)

2. Copy all 4 bsd disc images from digit dvd
(or download from http://www.freebsd.org) to /freebsd folder.

3. open terminal window & type
cd /freebsd & press enter.

4. Now type
mount -o loop -t iso9660 7.0-RELEASE-i386-disc1.iso /freebsd/mnt
& press enter.

5. Now go to the /freebsd/mnt folder & copy paste the
cdrom.inf file on desktop.

6. in terminal window type :
tar -C /freebsd/mnt -cf – . | tar -xf -
& press enter.

7. Then issue this command :
umount /freebsd/mnt
& press enter.

8. Now on the terminal repeat this step
for all remaining three images. eg.

[root@localhost freebsd]# mount -o loop -t iso9660 7.0-RELEASE-i386-disc2.iso /freebsd/mnt
[root@localhost freebsd]# tar -C /freebsd/mnt -cf – . | tar -xf -
[root@localhost freebsd]# umount /freebsd/mnt

[root@localhost freebsd]# mount -o loop -t iso9660 7.0-RELEASE-i386-disc3.iso /freebsd/mnt
[root@localhost freebsd]# tar -C /freebsd/mnt -cf – . | tar -xf -
[root@localhost freebsd]# umount /freebsd/mnt

[root@localhost freebsd]# mount -o loop -t iso9660 7.0-RELEASE-i386-docs.iso /freebsd/mnt
[root@localhost freebsd]# tar -C /freebsd/mnt -cf – . | tar -xf -
[root@localhost freebsd]# umount /freebsd/mnt

9. Now go to the /freebsd folder and delete
the mnt & rr_moved folder. Also delete the four iso images.

10. Now copy the cdrom.inf file from desktop
& paste it into the /freebsd folder.

11. In terminal window type :
cd /freebsd/packages
& press enter.

12. Type in : for eg:
[root@localhost packages]# sed -ie ’s/|2/|1/g’ INDEX
[root@localhost packages]# sed -ie ’s/|3/|1/g’ INDEX

13. Go to /freebsd/packages folder & delet a file called INDEXe

14. On the terminal issue this command to get a bootable dvd iso image of freebsd:
mkisofs -V FreeBSD-7-dvd -J -R -b boot/cdboot -no-emul-boot -o /FreeBSD-7.0-RELEASE-i386-dvd.iso /freebsd

This will create FreeBSD-7.0-RELEASE-i386-dvd.iso under /.

15.  Issue this command to burn the created iso file :
growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/cdrw=/FreeBSD-7.0-RELEASE-i386-dvd.iso

or Burn this with your your desired burning app like k3b, brasero etc.

Note : You need a linux box to create this dvd. I’ve used fc8.
